Breast Implant Types: Silicone and Saline Options

Saline implants are filled with saline, typically at the time of surgery. These tend to feel firmer than silicone implants. Silicone implants are prefilled with silicone gel, which is a thick, sticky fluid that mimics the feel of natural tissue. In most cases, there is little to no discernible difference between the appearance of breasts augmented with saline versus silicone, but there could be a slightly greater chance of visible rippling or wrinkling with saline implants. The chances of this are reduced when implants are inserted under the pectoral muscle.

For this reason, each patient’s individual muscle stiffness or looseness is important to consider when choosing implant type. The “gummy bear implant” is a teardrop-shaped and made of a highly cohesive silicone gel that maintains the implant’s shape and, much like the silhouette of a natural breast, gently slopes to a full projection point in the lower portion of the implant. The teardrop-shaped implant is thinner at the top, therefore it gradually blends into the upper chest.

Procedure

The breast augmentation surgery, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, will be performed under general anesthesia at Vinings Surgery Center in Atlanta. The surgery can take up to 2 hours, depending on the procedure type and if other surgeries are performed at the same time.

Breast implants can be placed through one of three incisions. A common site is the peri-areolar incision between the dark and light interface of the areola and paler breast skin. This incision gives an excellent cosmetic result. It can also be placed at the skin crease underneath the breast itself or through the underarm region, referred to as a transaxillary approach. Considering the fact that most breast augmentation patients will require more breast surgery in the future, a more direct approach is preferred.

Risks and Recovery

Breast augmentation risks include infection and asymmetry. Tightening and hardening of scar tissue around the implant (capsular contracture), or rupture of implant may occur. Surgery may be required to release the scar tissue or remove or replace the implant. Other risks include increase or decrease in the sensitivity of nipples or breast skin, which is occasionally permanent. Accurate mammogram after breast augmentation will require a special technique.

The specific details of your recuperation from the procedure will be influenced in large part by the size and position you choose for your breast implants. In general, however, you will need to take at least a few days off from your work and three weeks off from any exercise you regularly perform. Dr. Colgrove will direct you as to the best course of action for your individual case. Swelling and some degree of pain are normal after such major cosmetic surgery, but they will begin to subside less than a week after the breast augmentation, and can be combated using a number of methods you can discuss with Dr. Colgrove. In most cases, the bulk of the recovery process can be completed from the comfort of your own home.
