Stay Beautiful and Bright This Holiday

Tag Archives: beauty

Everything seems to take on a special glow this time of year. But if that holiday brightness seems to have drained from your skin with all the hustle and bustle of the season, help is on the way! Here are a few tips from VSC esthetician Roseanne Warchola for staying your beautiful and radiant self throughout the holidays:

  • Avoid hot water baths and showers, and use creamy cleansers instead of harsh and drying soaps.  Apply a cream or lotion to your face and body as soon as you get out of the shower to lock in moisture.
  • Consider having a paraffin wax treatment for your hands and feet–there are so many benefits. Paraffin is known to speed healing, soothe pain in joints and muscles, moisturize skin, open pores and increase blood circulation.
  • Put a humidifier in your bedroom and use it while you sleep.  A humidifier can provide a number of health benefits to people who suffer from dry skin, sinusitis, itchy eyes and throat, cracked lips and other health problems caused by dryness. By adding moisture to the air, the humidifier counteracts the dryness created by turning up the heat.

It’s difficult enough to gather all the information needed to make the right decision for you regarding cosmetic surgery without having to sort through all the confusing misconceptions and myths that are out there! Everything ranging from rumors that an airline flight will cause breast implants to pop to the misguided idea that the sun will melt a nose implant after rhinoplasty. Sometimes the Internet is not our friend when it comes to getting reliable information. Here’s some great information from EmaxHealth.com to help separate the facts from fiction.

Myth: Plastic surgery is a luxury only the wealthy can afford.

Fact: As with any other lifestyle choice, the average person may have to save and budget for it, but it’s within reach. What most patients have in common is not their wealth, but that they want to feel good about their appearance and understand that treatments are available to address their concerns. Payment options are available for patients such as plans, financing, partial prepayment, etc. This helps make plastic surgery much more mainstream, and not only reserved for the super wealthy.

Myth: Plastic surgery is unsafe.

Fact: Since patients having plastic surgery are having a purely elective procedure, reputable plastic surgeons usually will insist that the patient have a full medical clearance to ensure the patient is medically cleared for surgery. Many patients are worried about anesthesia and possible complications, but anesthesia is very safe, even for patients who have significant medical problems. Patients can protect themselves by seeking a plastic surgeon who is ASPS board certified and checking with the state department of health to see if any complaints have been filed.

Myth: All plastic surgeons will provide the same results.

Fact: In addition to certification and track record, it is important to look for someone who specializes in aesthetic/cosmetic procedures. If a surgeon in interested in this area, he/she is more likely to be very up to date on the latest techniques, products, etc. Also, it is important to look for someone who specializes in the part of the body you are interested in improving, because there is no substitute for experience.

With fall arriving and the holidays rapidly approaching, it’s the perfect time to consider freshening your look with a noninvasive procedure such as laser treatment, Botox or fillers. And just in time to start your planning process, we’re planning a Lunch and Learn Seminar focusing on Laser Treatments and Botox. Get answers to all your skin rejuvenation questions on Wednesday, October 3, at noon here at Vinings Surgery Center.

Learn more about laser treatments and Botox:

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Procedure: Laser skin resurfacing gently and precisely removes microscopic layers of skin, tightening sagging skin and stimulating new collagen growth.

Length: 1 to 2 hours.

Anesthesia: General anesthesia

In/Outpatient: Outpatient.

Risks: For the most part lasers are very safe. However, as with any medical procedure there are risks and benefits. Scarring, pain, lack of permanent results, delayed healing up to several months, and other risks are uncommon, but possible. Sometimes additional treatment in the form of surgery may be necessary after laser treatment.

Recovery: Makeup may be applied within 7-10. Reduction of redness in the new skin layer can take from 4-12 weeks.

Botox

Procedure: For frown lines and crow’s feet, a BOTOX® cosmetic treatment will block impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. The BOTOX® cosmetic injection relaxes the muscles so they don’t contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.

Length: 5 minutes

Anesthesia: None

In/Outpatient: Outpatient.

Risks: Temporary bruising is the most common side effect. In some cases the toxin can migrate and cause temporary weakness of nearby muscles. In rare cases there can be a temporary drooping of an eyelid or facial asymmetry. The risk of any side effect depends on the muscles injected. Because the effects of the BOTOX® procedure are completely reversible, all side effects are only temporary.

Recovery: Immediate, with minimal restrictions for four hours.
