ABOUT BOTOX: Recent research has proven that Botox Cosmetic lasts up to 4 months. Experience these remarkable results for yourself. For frown lines and crow’s feet, the treatment blocks impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines.

The injection relaxes the muscles so they don’t contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.

Treatment takes just about 5 minutes and no anesthesia is needed. Temporary bruising is the most common side effect. In some cases the toxin can migrate and cause temporary weakness of nearby muscles. In rare cases there can be a temporary drooping of an eyelid or facial asymmetry.

The risk of any side effect depends on the muscles injected. Because the effects of the procedure are completely reversible, all side effects are only temporary. Recovery is immediate, with minimal restrictions for four hours.

Curious about Botox but not sure where to start? Check out this article all about the newest injectables in the latest issue of Best Self Atlanta, featuring advice from Dr. Colgrove:

These days, there seem to be endless options for anyone seeking a more youthful appearance. With the abundance of non-surgical procedures, anyone can turn back the clock with just one office visit. And while anti-aging injectables and fillers are based on science, the results can seem more like magic. …

Comparing prices on procedures can be [a] challenge. Most people have seen billboards that advertise Botox® for as little as $10, but in that case, the fee refers to the unit of product, not to the entire treatment cost. Each area of the face will typically require several units. Many doctors charge by the area treated rather than by the unit, and it gets even more complicated than that. “Pricing can vary based on anything from location to amount of product used to injector experience,” says Dr. Robert Colgrove of Vinings Surgery Center. …

Physicians, nurse practitioners, physicians’ assistants and registered nurses who have been trained in injectables can inject, but experience and training of the injector are always most important. “Referrals from other patients are a great way to find good injectors,” Dr. Colgrove says.

So if you are considering injectables, discuss the many options available with your dermatologist or plastic surgeon to develop a treatment plan that is ideal for your face. When done correctly, these small, non-surgical procedures can take years off your appearance.

Start the new year looking fresh and fabulous with these party-proof skincare tips:

  • One place stress can make an appearance is the eyes in the form of dark circles and puffiness. Dr. Colgrove recommends making sure you stay well hydrated, drinking 1 to 2 liters of water a day, as a way to keep eyes looking fresh and bright. Keeping alcohol and salt intake down (which can be a challenge this time of year with all the goodies everywhere), makes a big difference as well, reducing water retention.
  • Some existing skin conditions such as psoriasis, rosacea, acne and eczema can be exacerbated when the pressure it on. Check in with yourself often to measure how stressed you’re feeling. If you feel tension creeping in, take some time to give yourself the care and attention you need. Exercise, rest, quiet time and relaxing activities are important to incorporate balance into the hubbub of the festivities.
  • Be preventive. If you’re planning to attend or throw a bunch of parties, take some proactive steps to preserve your glow. Laser treatments can help, as can topical creams and serums, especially those with Vitamin C or retinol. Also switch to a richer, more emollient moisturizer for increased moisture.
  • If all that New Year’s merriment leaves you with puffy eyes the next morning, reach for a cold pack. Leave it in place for just a few minutes for quick, soothing relief.  Keep in mind sleeping with your head elevated can help minimize puffiness the next morning.

Everything seems to take on a special glow this time of year. But if that holiday brightness seems to have drained from your skin with all the hustle and bustle of the season, help is on the way! Here are a few tips from VSC esthetician Roseanne Warchola for staying your beautiful and radiant self throughout the holidays:

  • Avoid hot water baths and showers, and use creamy cleansers instead of harsh and drying soaps.  Apply a cream or lotion to your face and body as soon as you get out of the shower to lock in moisture.
  • Consider having a paraffin wax treatment for your hands and feet–there are so many benefits. Paraffin is known to speed healing, soothe pain in joints and muscles, moisturize skin, open pores and increase blood circulation.
  • Put a humidifier in your bedroom and use it while you sleep.  A humidifier can provide a number of health benefits to people who suffer from dry skin, sinusitis, itchy eyes and throat, cracked lips and other health problems caused by dryness. By adding moisture to the air, the humidifier counteracts the dryness created by turning up the heat.

Learn more about laser treatments and Botox:

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Procedure: Laser skin resurfacing gently and precisely removes microscopic layers of skin, tightening sagging skin and stimulating new collagen growth.

Length: 1 to 2 hours.

Anesthesia: General anesthesia

In/Outpatient: Outpatient.

Risks: For the most part lasers are very safe. However, as with any medical procedure there are risks and benefits. Scarring, pain, lack of permanent results, delayed healing up to several months, and other risks are uncommon, but possible. Sometimes additional treatment in the form of surgery may be necessary after laser treatment.

Recovery: Makeup may be applied within 7-10. Reduction of redness in the new skin layer can take from 4-12 weeks.

Botox

Procedure: For frown lines and crow’s feet, a BOTOX® cosmetic treatment will block impulses from the nerve to the tiny facial muscles that are related to expression lines. The BOTOX® cosmetic injection relaxes the muscles so they don’t contract. After treatment, the overlying skin remains smooth and unwrinkled while the untreated facial muscles contract in a normal fashion, allowing normal facial expression to be unaffected.

Length: 5 minutes

Anesthesia: None

In/Outpatient: Outpatient.

Risks: Temporary bruising is the most common side effect. In some cases the toxin can migrate and cause temporary weakness of nearby muscles. In rare cases there can be a temporary drooping of an eyelid or facial asymmetry. The risk of any side effect depends on the muscles injected. Because the effects of the BOTOX® procedure are completely reversible, all side effects are only temporary.

Recovery: Immediate, with minimal restrictions for four hours.

It’s the season for skirts, shorts and swimsuits, but if you have spider veins, you may be reluctant to bare your legs this summer. Sclerotherapy, now offered at Vinings Surgery Center, is a safe, effective and virtually painless way to eliminate this annoying (though not at all uncommon) cosmetic issue. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, at least half of all women develop small clusters of red, blue or purple veins that appear on the thighs, calves and ankles.

In some women, spider veins become noticeable in their early 20s. For others, the veins may not become obvious until they reach their 40s. Men get spider veins, too. However, usually they are concealed by hair growth on the leg.

A number of factors may contribute to the development of spider veins in the legs, including:

• Heredity

• Pregnancy

• Hormonal shifts

• Weight gain

• Occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, such as running, professional nursing, etc.

Sclerotherapy is the injection of a solution into each affected vein, causing it to collapse and fade. It can be performed on people of any age and is a good option for you if:

• You are bothered by spider veins anywhere on your body.

• You have a positive outlook and realistic goals for your spider vein treatment.

• You are committed to following your plastic surgeon’s prescribed course of treatment.

Nurse injector Carmen Wagner administers sclerotherapy at Vinings Surgery Center. She has been with the center for six years, and also administers fillers and Botox treatment. According to Wagner, sclerotherapy can be a more effective and longer-lasting vein solution than laser treatments, since it gets to the source of the spider veins and eradicates them completely. Wagner says she loves working with patients to provide sclerotherapy because “it makes such a big difference in their lives and how they see themselves.”

Sclerotherapy requires no anesthesia and is usually performed in an outpatient setting. Two or more sessions, each lasting about 20 to 30 minutes, Wagner says, are usually required to obtain optimal results. Although everyone is different, you can generally expect to receive one injection for every inch of spider vein that is treated. Bright light and magnification may be used to ensure maximum precision while the skin is held taut to inject sclerosing solution. A cotton ball and compression tape is often applied to each injection site as it is finished.

After treatment, you may be instructed to wear support hose to help your legs heal. You may feel some cramping in your legs for the first day or two after treatment. This discomfort is temporary and usually doesn’t require prescription medication. You will be given specific instructions that may include: How to care for your legs following treatment, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection, and when to return for a follow-up appointment.
