As we all celebrate Thanksgiving this week, it’s the ideal time to focus on gratitude. For example, we here at Vinings Surgery Center are grateful for the wonderful patients who make what we do so great every day! We love hearing your stories and seeing the transformations. Watching you take active steps to live your best possible life and make positive changes is always so inspiring. Thank you!
Did you know that in addition to improving your overall well being and mental state, expressing gratitude can actually make you healthier?
First, gratitude can help you sleep better. Researchers found that people who felt more grateful also reported more positive thoughts and feelings, which allowed them to fall asleep faster and improved their overall quality of sleep. The research suggests that taking just a few minutes before bed to write down or say aloud a few things you’re grateful for might help you fall into a deep slumber.
Also, gratitude may just be the inspiration you need to stick with your gym routine. Exercising regularly was just one of the additional benefits reported by the subjects in a study. If feeling grateful can boost your energy level and happiness and help you get a great night’s sleep, it’s no surprise it can help you stick with your workout program, too! Read more about what gratitude can do in this great Shape magazine article.
When you carve your jack-o-lantern this month, be sure not to just toss out those pumpkin “guts”! They’re super rich in alpha-hydroxy acids, antioxidants, beta-carotene, zinc and vitamins A and C. As if that weren’t enough, pumpkins are packed with anti-inflammatory benefits, natural UV protectors and even exfoliating properties.
Just remove the seed and try these spa treatment recipes from The Beauty Bean designed to give you smooth and sexy skin ready for the season ahead.
Pumpkin Pie Face Scrub
Mix a few tablespoons of cooked and mashed (or canned) pumpkin with 2 tablespoons of plain, unsweetened yogurt (rich in lactic acid, a great natural exfoliator) and 1 tablespoon of ground almonds and/or oats. Apply the scrub to your face and let it sit for a few minutes to allow the pumpkin and yogurt to start to soften dead skin cells before using your fingers to gently scrub your face in small curricular motions. The dead, dull skin cells will wash away and your face will look fresh and flawless.
Pumpkin Body Mask
Mix 1/2 cup pumpkin puree (fresh or canned),
1/2 cup virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil
(which not only moisturizes, but also helps to exfoliate deal cells and even has antibacterial properties) and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (which is antioxidant rich, antibacterial and smells delicious!). Apply generously to clean skin (in the shower is neatest!) and massage it into the skin. After 10 minutes, rinse with warm water and pat dry – we think this is a perfect body treat to do while you let a deep conditioning hair mask steep.
Pumpkin Honey Facial Mask
Mix a few tablespoons of pureed pumpkin with 1 whipped egg white (which will help tighten pores and reduce the appearance of fine lines), 1 tablespoon plain yogurt (which will help exfoliate) and 1 tablespoon honey (which is anti-bacterial, great for clearing acne). Apply to entire face, avoiding the eye area, and leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing. The yogurt and pumpkin will encourage cell-turnover and exfoliate, while the honey has antibacterial properties to ensure a fresh face for fall.

This weekend will mark the official start of fall, and that means thoughts soon will turn to cozy times indoors, holiday meals, fun with family and friends and a bit of indulgence all around.
But you can get a jump on staying fit this fall by planning to work some healthy (and fun!) practices into your routine. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:
- Head outside. Atlanta has an abundance of wonderful walking trails and natural spots where you can enjoy a refreshing hike, a ride down the river or a biking trip through the woods. Gather a few friends and plan a regular standing outing you can enjoy all season long.
- Workout earlier. The days will start getting shorter very soon, so it’s important to switch up your exercise times so you don’t get left in the dark. Start your run or walk earlier to make the most of precious fall daylight hours.
- Stay quenched. It may not come to mind as easily as it does in the heat of summer when you’re perpetually parched, but it’s just as important to get plenty of water during the cooler days of fall. Make sure to take water with you wherever you go.
- Enjoy seasonal delights. In addition to all the indulgent treats of the season, there are plenty of healthy flavors to be savored right now, as well. Enjoy pumpkins and pumpkin seeds, pears, parsnips, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, turnips and more to your heart’s content!
Embracing the season in a healthy way will help you stay fit and beautiful well into the winter. Enjoy!
The arrival of spring means it’s time for those legs to come out and play! Don’ t let spider veins hold you back from kicking up those bare heels and enjoying the season. Sclerotherapy is a safe, effective and virtually painless way to eliminate this annoying problem. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, at least half of all women develop small clusters of red, blue or purple veins that appear on the thighs, calves and ankles.
In some women, spider veins become noticeable in their early 20s. For others, the veins may not become obvious until they reach their 40s. Men get spider veins, too. However, usually they are concealed by hair growth on the leg. A number of factors may contribute to the development of spider veins in the legs, including heredity, pregnancy, hormonal shifts, weight gain, and occupations or activities that require prolonged sitting or standing, such as running, professional nursing, etc.
Sclerotherapy can be a more effective and longer-lasting vein solution than laser treatments, since it gets to the source of the spider veins and eradicates them completely. It requires no anesthesia and is usually performed in an outpatient setting. Two or more sessions, each lasting about 20 to 30 minutes, are usually required to obtain optimal results. Although everyone is different, you can generally expect to receive one injection for every inch of spider vein that is treated. Bright light and magnification may be used to ensure maximum precision while the skin is held taut to inject sclerosing solution.
A cotton ball and compression tape is often applied to each injection site as it is finished. After treatment, you may be instructed to wear support hose to help your legs heal. You may feel some cramping in your legs for the first day or two after treatment. This discomfort is temporary and usually doesn’t require prescription medication.

The low humidity and blasting indoor heat during the cold winter months can leave your skin feeling parched and looking less than radiant. With spring finally on its way, it’s time to get ready to bare those limbs and show a little more skin in the warmer days ahead.
Here are a few secrets from skincare expert Roseanne Warchola, medical esthetician at Vinings Surgery Center, to get your skin ready to shine under the sun!
- Exfoliate with beta hydroxy acids a few times a week to loosen the dead cells that make skin look dry and scaly.
- Immediately after cleansing and exfoliating, use a moisturizer with skin-quenching ingredients and antioxidants that protect skin cell membranes. Look for vitamins A, C and E as well as humectants like hyaluronic acid that will retain moisture and leave you with a dewy complexion.
- Use sunscreen with SPF, either in your moisturizer or makeup, every day. UVB rays are getting more powerful and are more likely than ever to cause sunburn, so don’t forget to protect your skin, particularly between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Start the new year looking fresh and fabulous with these party-proof skincare tips:
- One place stress can make an appearance is the eyes in the form of dark circles and puffiness. Dr. Colgrove recommends making sure you stay well hydrated, drinking 1 to 2 liters of water a day, as a way to keep eyes looking fresh and bright. Keeping alcohol and salt intake down (which can be a challenge this time of year with all the goodies everywhere), makes a big difference as well, reducing water retention.
- Some existing skin conditions such as psoriasis, rosacea, acne and eczema can be exacerbated when the pressure it on. Check in with yourself often to measure how stressed you’re feeling. If you feel tension creeping in, take some time to give yourself the care and attention you need. Exercise, rest, quiet time and relaxing activities are important to incorporate balance into the hubbub of the festivities.
- Be preventive. If you’re planning to attend or throw a bunch of parties, take some proactive steps to preserve your glow. Laser treatments can help, as can topical creams and serums, especially those with Vitamin C or retinol. Also switch to a richer, more emollient moisturizer for increased moisture.
- If all that New Year’s merriment leaves you with puffy eyes the next morning, reach for a cold pack. Leave it in place for just a few minutes for quick, soothing relief. Keep in mind sleeping with your head elevated can help minimize puffiness the next morning.

Everything seems to take on a special glow this time of year. But if that holiday brightness seems to have drained from your skin with all the hustle and bustle of the season, help is on the way! Here are a few tips from VSC esthetician Roseanne Warchola for staying your beautiful and radiant self throughout the holidays:
- Avoid hot water baths and showers, and use creamy cleansers instead of harsh and drying soaps. Apply a cream or lotion to your face and body as soon as you get out of the shower to lock in moisture.
- Consider having a paraffin wax treatment for your hands and feet–there are so many benefits. Paraffin is known to speed healing, soothe pain in joints and muscles, moisturize skin, open pores and increase blood circulation.
- Put a humidifier in your bedroom and use it while you sleep. A humidifier can provide a number of health benefits to people who suffer from dry skin, sinusitis, itchy eyes and throat, cracked lips and other health problems caused by dryness. By adding moisture to the air, the humidifier counteracts the dryness created by turning up the heat.
