Stay Beautiful and Bright This Holiday

Tag Archives: stress

Everything seems to take on a special glow this time of year. But if that holiday brightness seems to have drained from your skin with all the hustle and bustle of the season, help is on the way! Here are a few tips from VSC esthetician Roseanne Warchola for staying your beautiful and radiant self throughout the holidays:

  • Avoid hot water baths and showers, and use creamy cleansers instead of harsh and drying soaps.  Apply a cream or lotion to your face and body as soon as you get out of the shower to lock in moisture.
  • Consider having a paraffin wax treatment for your hands and feet–there are so many benefits. Paraffin is known to speed healing, soothe pain in joints and muscles, moisturize skin, open pores and increase blood circulation.
  • Put a humidifier in your bedroom and use it while you sleep.  A humidifier can provide a number of health benefits to people who suffer from dry skin, sinusitis, itchy eyes and throat, cracked lips and other health problems caused by dryness. By adding moisture to the air, the humidifier counteracts the dryness created by turning up the heat.

As joyful as they are, the holidays can bring with them quite a bit of stress. And if you’re feeling frazzled, it’ll show—even if you try to hide it.

Skin can be a visible gauge of stress levels.

Since our bodies make more of certain hormones, such as cortisol, in response to stress, breakouts and other skin reactions can flare up when we feel harried. Some existing skin conditions, like psoriasis, rosacea and eczema, can be exacerbated as well when the pressure it on. Another place stress can make an appearance is the eyes in the form of dark circles and puffiness. Dr. Colgrove recommends making sure you stay well hydrated, drinking 1 to 2 liters of water a day, as a way to keep eyes looking fresh and bright. Keeping salt intake down (which can be a challenge this time of year with all the goodies everywhere), makes a big difference as well, since it reduces water retention. As you enjoy the bustle of the holidays, check in with yourself often to measure how stressed you’re feeling. If you feel tension creeping in, take some time to give yourself the care and attention you need. Exercise, rest, quiet time and relaxing activities are important to incorporate balance into the hubbub of the holidays. Our skincare experts have many ways to help you refresh your skin this season.
