What Happens During A Hair Transplant Procedure?

What Happens During A Hair Transplant Procedure? There are different types of hair transplantation methods. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant involves several steps. It’s integral that you get the procedure performed from a board-certified plastic surgeon for best results. The entire procedure usually takes 6 to 9 hours. Responsible treatment providers ensure their patients understand the procedural steps before deciding to go ahead with the surgery. Vinings Surgery Center, led by reliable board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Colgrove, provides hair transplant procedures to patients in Atlanta, Marietta, Georgia, and surrounding locations.

About FUE Hair Transplant

Individual hair follicles are removed from the scalp and implanted in balding areas during FUE hair transplant. FUE was developed as a replacement for follicular unit transplantation (FUT) technique. FUT involved removing a huge section of the skin and transplanting it along with follicles on the new area.  FUE doesn’t result in a “hair plug” look since there are no sections of hair or skin that doesn’t match the surrounding areas. You won’t get a large scar in FUE as with FUT. The ideal candidate should have enough available hair follicles for transplant.

Step 1: Consultation and Preparation

You would be told everything about the procedure during the initial consultation. You should work with a surgeon that assesses every case individually and determines the optimal number of follicular grafts. You should be candid with your questions and expected goals. The surgeon will inform you of the pre-operative tests and other preparations required.

Step 2: Donor Graft Extraction

The surgeon will make use of specialized tools for extracting donor grafts from the donor area. Donor grafts are traditionally extracted from the sides and back of the scalp. Stemming from this, alternative donor areas are used in some cases. Grafts are extracted one by one during advanced FUE procedure. The best part is that FUE hair transplant doesn’t leave an elongated scar at the donor area.

Step 3: Graft Preservation

Active measures are taken by the surgeon’s team to preserve the grafts for implantation once extracted. The graft will be cleaned, sorted as per the number of hairs contained, and submerged in an active plasma solution. This maximizes survivability of the follicles. Petri dishes containing the grafts would be refrigerated until implantation.

Step 4: Graft Implantation

The grafts will be implanted by the surgeon as per the pre-decided technique. The grafts will be implanted one at a time between existing hair for producing high density of implantation. Your surgeon will have full control over the angle of implantation.

Step 5: Post-operative Care

Once the main steps of the hair transplant procedure are complete, the surgeon will provide you with a set of aftercare instructions. It is vital that you follow all post-operative care instructions fully. They may ask you to wash the donor and implantation areas with a particular solution. You would be explained techniques to protect the transplanted grafts from sun and other elements. Make sure you attend all follow-up appointments.
